Majorca is surrounded by lighthouses, ready to welcome seafarers and light up the way. There is an intrinsic charm to lighthouses that is difficult to explain, it evokes something historic. Probably given to its magnificence, or because of the way it appears along the coast, by the simplicity of its constant movement or to its solid structure. It may be due to its invention that changed human history. Majorcan lighthouses exert an attractive power upon those who find themselves head-on, either by sea or land. Its beauty is evident at all times of day and night.
Waking up in the capital’s Hotel Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, a 16th century building with each of its 12 rooms dedicated to a musician, the first lighthouse to be seen is Portopí Lighthouse. It is not only the lighthouse of Palma, but also the second oldest lighthouse still in use in the whole of Spain (the first is Tower of Hercules, A Coruña). It is an ancient lighthouse built in the 15th century with a medieval style and declared a cultural heritage.
Portocolom Lighthouse is on the east coast. Its traditional style and black and white horizontal stripes give it an eternal elegance. At the southernmost point of the island is Cap Salines Lighthouse that is only 17 meters above sea level. It was the first Spanish lighthouse to use solar panels (1983). Cap Blanc Lighthouse is a perfect place to see the sunset. It is in the middle of a field on a cliff 95 meters above sea level. It was opened in 1863. Very exciting!
When visiting these lighthouses the best place to stop for a lunch is Es Recó de Randa, in the center of the picturesque village Randa, at the foot of the mountain Puig de Randa.
Refined and elegant, it offers magnificent local gastronomy with a selection of meat or fish in a perfect environment for alls occasions.
On the west coast, there is the famous Sóller Lighthouse, perfectly place at the entrance of the charming natural port and the Formentor Lighthouse, uniquely placed on Cap Formentor at the point where the winds meet.
